Oh boo hoo. I spin out on anything over 6%, but the laws of nature must be obeyed. And the extra weight I carry around just for this little advantage is worth it. Its hard to work up any sympathy for you powerful climbers and your downhill problems.I've got a 52-11 but have exactly the same problem on descents...I literally can't go any faster and have to just accept that >I'm going to get dropped. I set myself targets for the top of climbs that I think will be enough to get me to the bottom of the next descent still in contention. For example I wanted 30 seconds on you (and the wolves chasing you down) at the top of the last long descent last night, which did prove to be enough. But yes you have to make the most of it on the sections that favour you to compensate for the parts that don't. I also decide who (usually @AndyMacca ) I have to beat (or a winning/losing margin to them) to get a beer afterwards.
Maybe you should join my interval training - 230 calories every 3 minutes for 15 minutes.
