This DP. Or lots of short rides with the odd long one thrown in, if you struggle to make time.

Mate definitely start pencilling in some rides with us at some point!
I like the idea of the TDC as this is flat and I can team up and Chaingang it!
The problem with long rides outside for me is that there are too many hills near me for my large behind to get up! And the fact that this would mean cycling in the real world .

Try some long Video rides. Ale man has some good ones and Geoff and Paulf have some that you can ride back to back to get the miles in.
I did one of Aleman's long rides which was hard work, about 65km or so. I think it's that I just don't like hills! Not sure I want to ride a 4 1/2 hour 100 miler on the trainer (I did it once about a year and a half ago and that was so boring!).

All this talk of long rides makes me exhausted just reading! I managed a 2 1/4 hour ride on the trainer earlier today and was shattered just doing that, although on an empty stomach and without stopping!

My question is, what sort of things should I do to train for longer rides? I've always been a 20 mile thrasher in the past!
2 1/4 hours on trainer. Sod that
I find RW so much easier.

I think you made your 'point' 3 times TT!

Long rides but what about HR and lactate etc etc?
I find everything is a race and go out too hard and burn out too quickly!

I was trying to tell Berty I’m not a natural fisherman but the forum said no!

With the long ride thing aaac said it mate. I’ve stopped using my hr monitor to be honest. Stats can bog you down sometimes. You just gotta get on your bike and ride as much as time and other stuff allows. The rest takes care of itself. If you have / get strava you can build up a picture of where you’re at. The thing with hills is even if you absolutely crawl up them it’s a start point. But they are great for getting you fitter.

I may need a bigger cassette! My 11/28 using 39/53 chainrings makes spinning almost impossible on the hills.
Problem is I've lost my confidence riding in the real world...

Did something specific happen to make you lose confidence? It might just be that it’ll come back over time.

Definitely change chainrings. Might be a pain if they’re 130 as opposed to 110bcd but worth it. Mate honestly don’t worry about going at it hard, a certain average speed or whatever. It’s just great being out in the real world this time of year. I can get a bit evangelical about it at times... but actually being out on a bike is cheap therapy for me. Then you can go back to the turbo to satisfy your competitive urges.

I went out about 5 1/2 years ago in the cold of winter..the cassette was 11/25 and trying to get up Dartmoor hills took its toll. I had problems breathing and ended up in A&E at 2am barely able to breathe... Found out I had asthma and since then I don't trust my body especially when hills are involved!
I should try an easy evening ride at some point!

Extreme conditions take its toll on the body in oddbways sometimes.

I've got to say the guys are right, get out IRL. Doing what you don't like is good for you. You cwrcertai want to change cassette and rings if you want to handle hills. A compact groupset 50/34 with a 11/32 shpush get you up most stuff ... You could also consider a sub compact 48/32 oval from Absolute Black ... It won't make that much difference to your top speeds but will get you up hills.

As far as stats go FORCE YOURSELF to work in no more than zone 2 heart rate wise, Zone 1 if you can manage it. I use my commute to work as a recovery ride ... Trying to stay on zone 1 (below 116bpm for me) is really tough, but worth it.
