First Bkool ride back (CG2) after a week away last night and the break seems to have done me good - felt fresh and strong! I clearly need to take more holidays!

But it wasn't meant to be a bkool day - I had a lovely new Canyon Ultimate CF SLX Disc waiting for me which had arrived while I was away. I built it up and fitted pedals yesterday and was just getting ready to take it on its maiden voyage when I noticed a significant crack in the carbon on the headtube - it's really hard to see indoors but showed up in the sunlight outdoors. Gutted

I'm a bit annoyed I didn't see the damage the moment I got it out of the box - over-excited to get out on it I guess - but relieved I did spot it before riding it (or worse, riding around on it for a week or two!) as that would surely have been harder to prove I hadn't caused the damage myself.

Now I wait to see what Canyon's customer service is like with regards returns.....

That's near enough what I have mounted on my turbo Paul. Canyon CF SL. I'm sure you'll have no trouble with customer services sending you a new bike but I will give you one word of warning. Do watch out for the steering geometry as it's incredibly twitchy if yours has the same steering head angle as mine. I've had horrendous speed wobbles before which seems to become apparent when cornering fast downhill or with cross winds at speed. I've never known anyone else to have one so at the moment it's just my opinion but it'll be interesting to see what you think. I remember not being able to go as quick as you and Adam on the ultra fast bits during the DD.

Hmm thanks for that warning Bill - when I eventually get one on the road I'll bear it in mind. I did notice that my bike had something in the manual saying specifically it shouldn't be used in a Turbo - is that something they've only recently brought in for newer models or were you aware of that and just did it anyway? It may just be their lawyers being a bit over cautious in saying that, I don't know why they would specifically not be suitable for turbo trainers? (I intend keeping my current Defy for the trainer anyway so not an issue for me)

I think @Norseman Runar just got a new Canyon Inflite. You guys are giving me an attack of bike envy.

I've had mine on the turbo now for almost 3 years without a hint of a problem. Your frame will be of higher quality CF than mine being the SLX but I doubt that means it's weaker in any way, probably slightly lighter and more rigid perhaps. I was never aware of any such limitations by Canyon but I never did read up or look at the warranty. I've always reckoned that it's easier on the bike on the turbo compared to the road because the turbo is much smoother but there will of course be other loads going through the frame as the bike wants to lean but is held securely. Like you say, its probably just their lawyers being ultra cautious but you never know.

A friend of mine also got a Ultimate cf slx with crack in the headtube. They agreed that he returned it and they sent a new one. When he received it there was a crack almost same place at the headtube. He got really mad and in the end they made an agreement of 400 euro discount if he kept the bike.

Seems like they have a general problem in their production

Not quite sure why you cannot use it on a turbo. It's only your body weight on the bike on a smooth roller as opposed to your body weight and bumps in the road. I only suppose it could be the way that the bike is clamped and body movement could put stress into the rear stays.

Thanks Jacob that's really interesting - particularly as I have just had an email back from canyon saying: "The damage to your bike looks unlike anything I have ever seen before" - and asking me to send several more photos of the complete bike (which is a right pain as I boxed it back up today!)

Here's a pic of what I'm missing out on enjoying
