Knife, always. And nothing ever goes behind my ear, other than the hook-thing of my glasses frame, and a little soap and water every few months (whether it needs it or not).

If I really can't see the marks at all, I'll use the tape trick.
Nothing, not even a pencil, as a sign of a seasoned woodworker who knows what he's doing!
Trouble is soap and water won't stay there.

Tape trick, new one on me.

If you can't see your mark, you can apply a strip of masking tape across the end-grain and then make your knife marks in the normal way. Then peel off the (cut) tape between the pins, leaving it obvious where you need to saw.

Can I take it marking the area out with a softer pencil has gone out of fashion?

Relax. The marks are easy to see:

Do you mean the carriagemaker's plane, in the top right hand corner? If so, it's a 19th century tool, I believe. I struggle with it, as it chatters a lot.

Yes, I've a number of jack planes, and a number 10 rebate plane. I made the bow saw, and the fret saw is in the top left hand corner.

First saw pear cider made by Bulmers, so I'd not count is as one of the trendy ciders.
Bulmers for me. And not for any other use than supping.
Why dilute it!
Fer how long though. If you're away to a garden centre, what's to stop the Young Un sneaking in and snaffling it?
Why not. With yer cider or yer coffee?

But no jack rebate. It'd be on the bottom shelf, left-hand side.
You sure that's not a coping saw?
The throat looks a bit small for a fret saw.
