I'm willing to bet duct tape is a different set of standards...
The card tubes, designed for machine use/hand drawn applicator, shouldn't be though.

Bet they are. Masking tape is probably defined by the DIN paper standards, and Duct tape is defined by the DIN fabric standards, and both departments are fiercely territorial of their cardboard tube size decision making powers.
Just checked the following, Duct Tape(3M), sellotape(Sellotape), two different sizes of masking tape(3M & Sellotape), brown tape(3M) and a roll of silage tape. All have the same size card tube, three inches internal diameter.
