OK, train advice required (@the_mikey, @172traindriver, @classic33 - or anyone else who wants to chip in!) please.

In August the CC Tour is cycling to Inverness, myself and Junior Fu then need to get back to Fife (Inverkeithing is our closest main station) with our bikes on Monday 17 August - cheapest fare at present seems to be £76.20 (trainline, redspottedhanky).

Should I:
a) bite the bullet and book as early as I can;
b) wait until nearer the time and see if any cheaper fares come up;
c) leave it until the day and chance it;
d) use some other convuluted route of railcard, etc (we are both students, not sure if that counts for anything?)

There's no real rush to leave on the Monday though would obviously prefer to get going as soon as - additional complication is getting the bikes on board.

Thoughts???

If you can, try to book an advanced ticket, you might have to wait a month or two before these tickets are available plus make sure you can book your bicycle on the trai, it's by far the cheapest way to travel although you do have to commit to the exact train and time you've booked. If you need flexibility then buying off peak anytime returns is your only option but you may be able to knock a few pounds off the price by splitting the tickets, ie buying a return from station A to station B, then purchasing a separate return from station B to station C. Use red spotted hankey to experiment.
