I wouldn't say I'm IT literate, but thanks for the compliment. Different people like different Operating Systems. I'd a Vista based laptop that worked OK.
Can reinstall Windows 95D(first USB supported OS from Windows) if need be.
You "right clicked" on the hard drive disc and run disc cleanup? It'll clear out all old files that may be slowing the computer down. Then Disc Defragmenter a number of times until its almost instantaneous.
Try a download of AVG to help clear out old files/registry entries no longer in use. There's a 30 day free trial that will allow you to do all this.
We have Windows Vista Home Premium thingymiBob on ours & I suppose all things considered, it's o.k, will try the actions you put forward soon-ish & it may earn it a reprieve from the bin (until money is more free flowing).

Got to get myself on a basic I.T course too (but time is even tighter than cash) & work won't put me through it in work time.

I might be doomed to a life of Numptyness.

First computer bought was an ex council one. That hadn't been cleared of anything prior to sale. Came complete with a host of council files and programs that the council had paid for. Still have most of the stuff copied of the drive.
