So. If I'm in the highest ring I should try to avoid using the highest gear? And if on the lowest ring avoid the lowest gear?

Can lead to an undignified parting of the way with the bike. As well as increasing wear & tear.

So let me get this right. If I am using the middle ring and I'm in the highest gear, I should not shift up Into the highest ring. I should change to a lower gear, then change to the highest ring. Is that right?

Doesn't sound right. What Classic means is the largest size rings not the highest geared. So if you were in the highest gear (big ring) at the front you wouldn't use the lowest geared (largest size) sprocket on the back and if on the lowest gear (small ring) at the front you shouldn't use the highest (smallest sprockets) at the rear.

Correct, avoid excessive cross chain gear selection. In the ideal world you try to keep the chain as straight as possible.
