I was getting a bit concerned. Thought I might have to come up to Yorkshire and knock on your door.
(At least it would have been a good excuse to go to Yorkshire).
Come "door knocking" round here, at that time would probably mean you're checking to see if there's anyone inside, before you attempt to break in.

I don't know although the smell has been missing from the air these last few summers...

:hello:
Just means all the other smells it covered & as a result you missed, you can now get.
Rotting waste, uncollected rubbish on warm days, the local growers house's. Those kind of smells.

You have very polite criminals in Yorkshire. Knocking first and not wanting to disturb you if you're in.
Yep, except in certain agricultural uses. What they've put in place of it is useless. And dearer!
Old engine oil is probably better than most of the modern preservatives that are available to the general public and around here it's an easy way to get rid of the oil without having to pay someone to take it off your hands.

Nowt to do with being polite. More their own safety, as more people are willing to take them on. Pick axe handle kept just out of sight, but within reach just in case.
Used it twice. Once to knock someones hand of the shed handle the other giving a bit of incentive to two people trying to remove the door on a neighbours shed.
They left empty handed. Can't think why!!
