It's an American thing - sales to coincide with Thanksgiving, which they are trying to bring over here. Since the term Black Friday was used in the UK for a stock market crash I'm not quite sure it sends out the right vibe.

Yup that too (one of several). I think that was the one when they first computerised the stock market and trades were happening too fast for the traders to keep up with.
