Just back in after doing some digging. Spread out that compost and turned it in (after I'd dug the last of the parsnips). Clay is still a bit claggy but the surface is drying quite well. Not long now and it'll be veg planting time of year

(I can answer my own question - it is caused by the same mutant gene that made me think that a 6' 1" teenager needed to wear 3 inch platform boots, skin tight pink satin loons, and grow his hair so long that he used to accidentally sit on it ... )
