Im trying to lose weight by cycling and eating sensibly since im 256lbs. Today i steamed some beans, cauliflower, baby carrots and there were some green thingys that were 2 cm long and there was a bean in there. Im not sure what its called. Beans are okay but eating boiled cauliflower was not tasty at all... Well there are many veggies that i should i eat like tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli and i dont know what else. For breakfast i eat nestle fitness cereal and when i get cravings in the midday i also eat it. We dont got skim milk in Estonia, 2,5% is minimum.

So in general how do u eat veggies? If i boil them i should also add some meat or fish or what?

where do you live fella..?? Do you live alone? Do you live with others? At home, with your parents?

Cauliflower needs to be cooked for a time in juices, so stews or currys are good. Otherwise in a cheese sauce. On the other hand, raw is great, so break them off into mini florets and add to a salad.

Try squashes (Green Acorn, Red Onion). Again, stewed or fried is good.

Generally try cooking veg different ways until you find what you like. Try boiling them for a short while (lovely and crunchy) or longer (softer). Try steamed (better colour), fried (not that healthy), roasted (still not healthy) or in a casserole/stew (very soft, but lots of flavour). Try different supplies - very fresh is better than frozen, but finding a good variety makes a bigger difference. However it can be tricky, since you are never told what sort they are when you buy them. Look for a good shop where they care about the taste.

Winter, and root veg can be great. Parsnips are often roasted, swede is boiled and mashed, celeriac has a strong flavour, and is best combined with other roots.

make a indian masala and stick the boiled veggies in with the water, as the water reduces, you will end up with savourey veggies

I am a strict omnivore, and I love steamed vegetables: only just cooked, and not boiled down to an almost mush as my mother use to do.
I like my veg cooked but slightly crisp, and the steamer is the best way of doing this ...... and a lot of the vital vitamins, and minerals are not destroyed. The steamer also saves me money because I will often go 2 or 3 trays high with it.

I mix up my staples and probably only eat potatoes twice per week. Bland staples can always be perked up a little, and a favourite of mine is to add dried peppers, sun dried tomatoes and stoned Olives to Couscous at the cooking stage. I also put the bowl of almost cooked couscous at the top of the steamer so that it is still hot when served. The same can be done with Rice, bulgur Wheat, and pearl Barley.

As for the meat just cut back a little and make a goulash, supreme, stroganoff etc, but with less meat and add a few other herbs and spices to liven it up bit. Again the important minerals trace and vitamins remain in the cooked dish.

Fish, well we eat fish or sea food at least 3 times each week, and the trick is to cook it hot and fast, but never to over cook it, Lois and I are also very fond of raw fish.

I like veggies that are over-boiled and reduced to mush

Soup is your friend. Boil em up, up add spices to taste and purée til you get bored. Serve with fresh bread. :hungry:

I could be wrong, but avoiding meat won't help you lose weight - I was vegetarian for about a year (year before last) and I don't think it made any difference, in fact I think I was hungrier and ate more because I never felt full up!

Definitely not... I have living proof of that sitting opposite me at work.. the fat veggie lump.

I just wondered who cooks the meals where you live - and whether questions like this might be better directed at them, rather than an online forum. Maybe someone at home can actually show you.

Either way, as said above - eating veg is not in itself a path to weight loss. You need a calorie deficit to lose weight. Your soccer-playing brother presumably eats the same meals as you, and I'm guessing he's not over-weight..??

Without wishing to sound like a pillock, why don't you offer to cook for your dad and brother? That way you get get almost total control over what you eat, you learn a skill that will keep girlfriends happy, you take pressure off your dear old dad and we'll all think you're cool.

My brother eats whatever he wants, kebabs ,burgers and all that. Hes really fit and has a sixpack too. He doesnt care about eating healthy since he practically plays soccer every day.
