More likely the pawls are worn or broken given the noise you say it's making. As I said you won't know until you have it apart.

Ok so have wheel and cassette off.

Not quite sure how to remove freehub?

Looks like there are flat points on the axle, I'd expect that an adustable wrench on the rotor side and a cone spanner on the freehub body side should do it. Cone spanners are quite thin - about 2mm you may have a set if you have ever taken a regular cup & cone hub apart for servicing.

They look something like this.

Just to add, keep in mind it may well be reverse threaded on the drive side.

The bearing may have got a bit stuck on the axle, chances are it needs a little tap with something to free it up.

Normally the freehub should be held in place with the axle end caps, certainly this is the case with most hubs I've seen. The other alternative, which tends to be the case on older designs is that the axle sleeve may be removeable and then the freehub body is loosened by using an allen bolt and turning to loosen it. However I can't see any obvious signs of an allen fitting, so my guess would be the friction fit needs a little encouragement to let it be removed.

I have the axle off and the freehub is still solid on the wheel

Maybe time to check out those wheel building videos on YouTube  and suitable hubs.

Just try putting a pipe wrench on the freehub as it may just screw on.

Edit. I think I see the way. If you look you can see see two cutouts diametrically opposed to each other. This will need a special tool but there’s a vi on YouTube by RJ who made one from a 21mm socket.

Good spot, this may well be the solution.
