You already said your muscles were weak because of a diagnosed medical condition? That's fine, I accept that. People with normal leg function will not have any issues in pushing pedals.
Probably not,but getting up hills requires a certain amount of strength,& when someone is new to cycling,& unfit ,any building up of strength & stamina must surly be a good thing.

Agree that any exercise is good, but leg strength is not a limiting factor for cycling at any level, beyond a few track disciplines.

None of us would get very far without muscles, fairly obviously. The question was whether hitting the gym will make you better at cycling. To which the answer is usually no.

it would if as the first poster says hes a begginer ,what he would find that his leg and core muscles would fatigue easily ,now with the correct training programme in the gym he could improve this dramaticly ,combine this with a decent diet ,and milage his stamina would improve to the extent where he could cut the gym work out completely ,i know cyclist good ones at that who never pressed a weight in their lives ,then i know others esp tri based ones that swear by a weight routine

Fast and careful!
Strengthens the muscles in the knee,or so my Doc says,& he is supposed to know.

I am surprised that your doctor advised weights to cure a knee pain, its not right or wrong but its probably not a long term cure!
I now run and cycle longer distances by the month and I developed knee pain ,and have got to the bottom of my knee pain that has occurred over the last 18 months,
as my weekly distances rose my fitness raised but recovery of knee was low
I took the advice of a biomechanics expert, and a lot of knee pain comes to flexibility I have majorly improved my flexibility of quads which were my problem,my hams which were ok and my calves which ripped due to over loading as a secondary injury,as with all loading flexibility exercises they hurt to get through but you need to seek advice
from a expert, I have also been prescribed orthotics for running and daily use, being adjusted weekly,
Just you may want to look into your flexibility it has worked for me,the same with the op of the thread stretching and flexibility will only improve your ride

Is that another way of saying that you can't answer? I'm just interested in why you would think that gym work would be useful, when leg strength is not a limiting factor in cycling? Why say these things if you can't support them?
