Just an update on the Green People organic sunscreen I posted about upthread.

We have just got back from 8 days cycling in Provence which involved very intensive testing of these two products.

https://www.greenpeople.co.uk/shop/by-concern/sun-solutions/facial-sun-cream-spf30-50ml

I give both a hearty thumbs up. The first day, I failed to apply right up to the edges of the armholes of my sleeveless dress and yep, I got a bit burnt. But just in the narrow untreated strip and I was lucky it wasn't severe. The last day, I failed to reapply sunscreen to my legs at lunch time and get a bit pink on my calves. Again, lucky it wasn't worse.

But everywhere else got a very gradual steady, even tan without a hint of pink. While I am in principle opposed to getting any kind of sun damage, given I have very pale freckly skin and we were out in 28+ degree Provencal sun all day long, every day for 8 days -- and I have never ever succeeded in getting any kind of tan without first going through a red lobster phase and I only tried that method ONCE as you can imagine -- I am very very pleased.

Dunno why everyone's on about sunburn and tanning, the only thing likely to make me go brown at the moment is rust.

I always buy sunscreen in Australia, because they have stricter regulatory requirements - you're not allowed to market a sunscreen there if it doesn't meet certain standards. Strangely, though Green People products are available in Australia, I couldn't find their sunscreen on Australian sites that sold other Green People products, and it's not listed on the http://www.green-people.com.au website.

Then I found on a NZ website (the NZ equivalent of Which? I would guess) that it doesn't block UVA well. UVB is responsible for burning and most cancers, while UVA ages the skin and also contributes to cancer. Your experience verifies that it blocks UVB. Only testing shows how well it blocks UVA.

Just FYI

Wow, that's good to know. I thought physical blocks (titanium dioxide in this case) were equally good at blocking both. The GP website certainly claims that it does. Hmmmm.

Honestly, I don't know for sure. The fact it's not available in oz feels important, but maybe they just don't want to pay for getting the approval rather than they are afraid it won't pass.

You can't get P20 in Australia, and I assume that is because it's unique selling point is it lasts all day. All sunscreens have to advise you to reapply regularly, and after swimming, so they wouldn't be able to claim it lasts all day. Without that it's just an expensive sunscreen that stains your linen.

£3 bottle of SPF 50 from Tesco works wonders for me. Put it on before I leave, then I carry a tube of the same stuff in my pocket to put on after 2 hours.

Get some funny looks when I am re-applying cream but I burn so easy I don't care.
