In my case it'll be more of a "silly sun burn"

So there are no long sleeved tops which are nice and cool at the same time then?
I have a couple of pair of tops, a CC Endura Tal and a club (demarchi or some Italian make I think) that I'll take with me on summer trips; there light and cool enough, although I prefer the short sleeve/ arm warmer combo they're there if I got bad sunburn.

have you looked at the looser fitting long sleeved tops? i got one from edinburgh cycle co-operative..NOT SURE IF ITS WHAT YOUR AFTER BUT I'VE deliberately gone for looser fitting tops (and baggy shorts) this year(may feel cooler? and you can always roll up sleeves), i'm going more for the 'mountain biker' sort of look, i have all the lycra i'll need but ;
1. i've put on a lot of weight since last years, er..'liquid health problems' and gradually getting back out on the bike - i look like the only gay in the village in lycra
2. its just a personal preference/image thing ; i ride mostly road but generally for pleasure as opposed to every ride turning into a race (my bike is a GIANT CRS hybrid)

i'm aware of the advantages of tight fitting lycra but as i say its just a personal thing.

the more clothing / layers i add to my collection it seems the longer i take deciding what gear to wear , especially at this time of year with this odd , changeable weather

I have just bought one of those lightweight vest type football tops from Sports World.

I will wear this under my normal short sleeved jersey with arm warmers for those mornings where it's a bit chilly and for the afternoons where it's chilly too.

When you've been riding for a few hours in a loose fitting jersey, you'll wish you hadn't bought that parachute.
It's good training though, increasing aerodynamic drag.

I wear a long-sleeved base layer unless temperatures are above about 24 degrees.

In cold weather I wear a long-sleeved jersey on top.

In cool-mild weather I wear a short-sleeved thick jersey and arm-warmers on top. The arm-warmers get rolled up and down (or taken off) as required.

In warm weather, I wear a lightweight jersey and ditch the arm-warmers. I roll the base-layer sleeves up when I'm warm, and roll them down for descents.

In hot weather, I wear a thin short-sleeved base layer below a lightweight jersey.

So, no need for a long-sleeved summer jersey!

Flipping heck!!! How hot is your definition of hot, if you are still in a long sleeved baselayer at 24 degrees????

Excuse me, can I repeat that?

Flipping heck!!!

Saturday's Meriden 100 was 9' C at the start, and that's warm enough for short sleeves and shorts.
Yesterday morning and this morning was 8' C at 05:30 for my commute and I'm in Short sleeves.

Mind you, short 100s and commuting is for 'fat burning'.

I was there too (as you know) and I wore shorts and lightweight leg-warmers, the long-sleeved base layer, one of my thicker short-sleeved jerseys, arm-warmers (which stayed on all day), a gilet (which also stayed on all day) and a lightweight rain jacket which was on and off all day. I admit that I did get a bit too warm when the sun was shining, but as soon as I started to strip something off, the sun would disappear and the rain would start again...

I'd rather be a bit too warm, than too cold.

If I'd have worn leggings and long sleeves, ( from my own personal experience, so don't take this as instructional ;) ) I would have sweated my bollox off and got dehydrated.

I find a fair ammount of windchill supresses the release of sweat, so fluids are retained in the system. Blood is pumped to the subcutaneous layer to keep my epidermis warm, which while being a 'waste' of energy, is one of the quickest ways to burn fat. - My secondary objective for riding 100s.

The primary objective being the Brevet 2000 patch.

PS No 'goosebumps' on forearms, so OK.

What shall I wear going home ?
I have with me at work
Thick long sleeve top (Fleecey and Warm)
A short sleeved Top (Not V warm)
Vest Underlayer

I also have 2 x Jackets a light showerproof jacket and a thick warmer showerproof jacket.

It's about 12 degrees and looks like it is going to be V heavy rain !

I was going to suggest Ground Effect as per the link above - they're supposed to be great and it's the only place I've seen a specific summer long sleeve jersey (obviously they need to cover up a little more often than here!)

I've only got a tee shirt and a SS jersey. No choice.

Then again, I've swam in colder water than the Warwickshire rain.

Harden up and get wet!

BTW, Its pissing down at Gaydon, and its heading straight for Brum.

Are there no decent "summer long sleeved jerseys" then?

I'm of a ginger persuasion and am going on a tour where it will hopefully be nice and sunny (well, I hope it's overcast, the other two probably are hoping for sunshine  ) and I'd rather have one less place to cream up...

yep, they are made by ground effect of NZ and they are lovely lovely things

The Spesh 'One Less Car' LS top is thin - it's summer weight like the short sleeve, with long sleeves - I've got it, but it was in EBC's sale - not cheap. Decathlon are doing cheap summer tops £7.95, add in some arm warmers, you'll be way under £20
