In November I saw a really heart warming story on the excellent London Calling Blog, about an elderly gentleman named Gordon Gibbens with a passion for photographing graffiti and street art. The post was about a book written by his daughter Jane called ‘how graffiti saved my Dad’s life (at least for a short while)'. This is a lovely read:
https://londoncallingblog.net/2018/11/28/how-graffiti-saved-a-mans-life-at-least-for-a-while/ There was a link to buy a book with a selection of Gordon’s photos. Gordon sounded like my kind of guy, so of course I bought it.
I’m full of admiration for him and his amazing collection of images (over 30,000 photos he took over the years), his belief that anything’s better than a blank wall, his delight at meeting and talking to artists, his selective ignoring or certain rules if they prevented him getting the picture he wanted, and his overwhelming desire to keep exploring and photographing despite his failing health. After seeing his commitment I’ll think twice before moaning about cycling around London’s streets in the cold and wet looking for works of art.
And I found it very moving the lengths his daughter Jane went to help Gordon, firstly in her fight for the right care and support, and for doing everything she could to keep getting Gordon out and about to pursue his passion, right to the end. The book is mainly a photo book but with a short running commentary from Jane. It’s really well written, funny and moving, and a lovely tribute. In a climate of care packages assessed by cost, what she did was priceless.
Sadly Gordon passed away in April 2017, just a few months before I started photographing street art, so I never met him, but we have the same attitude. I’ve been pleading for blank unloved walls to be given some colour since the first page of this thread, I’m sure we’d have got along. I recognise all the spots he photographed and new works are still going up in those places, and I’m sure he’d like our ongoing collection here.
Jane lived in Penge so Gordon would have loved that over recent years it has become a street art destination. I’m a regular visitor and have documented most of the works there…...I’ll never forget the 7 visits and 70+ miles of cycling it took me to get a good photograph of the leopard from page 31.

It turns out there was a recent street art session in Penge organised by the London Calling Blog, which they dedicated to Gordon calling it the ‘anything’s better than a blank wall’ paint jam'
. My last post featuring the Indiana Jones was one of the pieces. I’ve been back and bagged some others, so these are all dedicated to Gordon.

I’m sure Gordon would be delighted. Well done to all involved
