Not convinced. The more popular sports will get more of the TV money, with no cross-subsidy. Just a way to exploit desparate sports fans by bundling everything together and charging a lot of money for it.

If every viewer/subscriber pays the same price for a subscription, but more of the pot of subscription money that the channel receives goes towards football than to cycling, which it obviously does, then the viewer who has only subscribed to watch cycling is paying towards the cost of the football rights even though they never watch it.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Yeah, I'll probably speak to my brother, he's had eurosport for years for the football so I'll try to borrow his account. Not going to pay for it. The longer term trend for all sports is away from free to air TV, essentially gatekeeping it away from fans based on affordability.

There does need to be a way to access it based on wanting to view a single sport, otherwise we'll all be paying £200 a month to access what we want on the basis of look how many sports you get for the price, even if I'm not interested in thirty leagues of power sander racing.

im a mite confused , i thought eurosport was being closed and your brother would need to pay for the new TNT service which depending on your provider is £18-30 a month to replace eurosport

Barnet,
I've been paying £6.99 to Discovery+ since the cycling went there from GCN+. I found I wasn't watching it much, but enough that it was nice to have it there if I wanted to watch a bit of cyclocross in the winter or some of a Grand Tour stage on the rare occasion I wasn't at work when it was on.

£30.99 a month though? Stuff that.

Sme here, I had the email this morning about the changes.
I won't be upgrading from the standard to premium.

Eurosport will still exist in other countries, but will no longer be included on any of the UK platforms (Sky/Virgin etc).

More like if we can force the cycling fans to pay more and justify it by bundling it with other sports, we can bid more for the rights to show it. Exclusive rights costs more, but if you can up income sufficiently, then it will pay for itself and then some.

The way things are going people are going to be "expected" to subscribe to a different company for every sport they like unless they stick to a single sport

and even then some sports might require you to pay several companies to watch it all

e..g if you follow Liverpool then you might be able to subscribe to xxx for every game at Anfield
but if they play away then you need to be on yyy for games at e.g Old Trafford is you want to see then thrash Man U

and if you like cycling and skiing thne you need 2 different service

so we end up going from paying Virgin or SKy and getting everything we need in our case
then we need Sky SPorts for teh Formula 1
then I need something else for cycling
and if Wimbledon goes somewhere we need that as well
and if I want to watch sailing then I probably need something else

and the costs are just silly money when added it all up

It does rather encourage people to look for an alternative
which provides an incentive for people producing "dodgy Fire sticks" or whatever

Yeah, he will, he's got the full sky sports package as it stands as well as a Eurosport subscription and did have BT sport as well at one point. He's always tried to watch all of it (football that is).

The alternative is for regulators to step in and stop the silliness.

Sport on TV is a product, not a social service. The owners will sell to the highest bidder and much as we may not like that there is little can be done about it.

As CW has said though, it could kill off interest in the sport in Britain just as happened with Moto GP when BBC lost the rights and it went to BT Sports.

I understand that, the problem is that the product "sport" is now turning into a monopoly with regard to who is buying the rights to distribute. This in turn means that prices will rise for the consumers to a point where if you want to watch anything you have to pay the maximum price the market will bear all whilst the provider is incentivised to provide the cheapest possible output.

There is no competition to drive down prices or improve the product. There is no reason why Discovery couldn't for example sell a base subscription at say £10 per month to get access to the core products and then individual sport passes for say £6 per month and then a full package for those that want it. They won't though.

It's a fair point and if this was the Wimbledon final, or the Grand National or the FA cup final or something like that and we were some decades in the past then there would be a deal of public grumbling, letters to the Times and something might or might not be done.

But this is a small minority sport, and the time is now. So nothing will happen.

Some are reporting being offered 7months at £15 after cancelling. I don't know if everyone gets this when cancelling in response to the price rise, or if it's an A/B test or worse. https://toot.bike/@pete/113905512494528851

Even if you all get it, subscribers are still being experimented on to see how much you will pay. They'll sharpen the tools for next year.

I saw this offer in the My Account page on the Discovery+ web site. I declined it as it is still more than twice what I'm currently paying and for the amount of time I watch it's not worth it for me.

It wasn't explicitly offered during the cancellation process but it shows there now after I've cancelled.
