You need to get a proper helmet fitting and insist on a carbon/titanium blend, lesser materials just won't do it. It's expensive, fitting and helmet approx £3k, but you know it makes sense. They don't actually offer any guarantees but, those of us in the know recognise that, nothing that expensive could be ineffectual.

But you don't want to look like a numpty so, once helmet is ready, you need to visit a quality hairdressers. They can cut and style your hair so that it fits smoothly into the vents on the helmet. Thus you can don, and remove, your new helmet, and your hairstyle remains unaltered.....simples

I seem to recall comments on how some of the more aggressively styled helmets had to be gaffer taped onto the headform for helmet tests, else the helmet would come off. Their own strap system wasn't good enough to hold it on, LOL!

The link I posted covers this.

The topic of conversation is fitting a cycle helmet, not how to start another 27 page discussion on cycle helmet effectiveness

With respect I disagree, I draw your attention to exhibit A

I've been seeing a lot on here recently about helmets and how incredibly important it is to wear them.

I have one of these...
...the helmet strap is doing it's best to kill me
...I can feel it seeming to get tighter, cutting off my air supply...

Had the same problem with a cheap Bell helmet. Seemed to fit OK in the shop, but a couple of short rides revealed it was strangling me. Turns out it's simply a crap fit - basically too big for my head, and I'm trying to keep it in place by tightening the strap too much.

I've ordered one of these instead, which has the "geared harness" that purplepolly recommends. Hopefully a neater fit around the head means the strap won't be doing all the work.

And yes, I know that a helmet will not save me from serious head injury. I know they are not manufactured from magic polystyrene. I too get angry when I read those "a helmet saved my life" news items, and hear the H&S nuts preaching about how dangerous cycling is, when it really isn't. But I still choose to wear one because (a) it keeps my family happy, which means I can cycle more and (:hyper: if I do hit the tarmac, a helmet might save me from a little road rash and a few stitches. Nowt wrong with that, surely.

Just do what the Pro Tour riders do on climbs, they take them off...

You b********d! Coming round here with your reasonable talk and your rational explanations. Who do you think you are? Eh? Eh? ;)

Personally I can't bear the straps so I cut them off and simply tighten the button at the back sufficiently to keep the helmet on. I appreciate that this may not keep the helmet on in certain circumstances but figure that it's better than nothing.
