I saw a very odd case of a driver getting stranded. I was out on my bike and had stopped near the bridge over the river Darent in Eynsford, Kent when I noticed a commotion behind me. Someone had driven their car into the ford and got stranded.

As noted there is a perfectly good bridge, but it's a bit narrow (2m), so there is a ford that is used by tractors and the like. For cars the bridge is absolutely fine. The driver, faced with the choice of a perfectly dry bridge and a very wet river had chosen the river. Why? I have no idea.

Living in Eltham Park, Eynsford was our family 'go to' place for a Sunday picnic when I was a kiddie about 60/65 years ago! There & Lullingstone (?) Roman villa.

I'm sure I'm not alone in needing to make an effort of will not to at least attempt the ford

Back in the day I remember my mother being a bit cross when our car conked out after my father had insisted in doing a ford in St David's would could have been avoided by going round a different way. No harm done and it dried off in 10 minutes.

There was one south of Aberystwyth I used to do regularly as it was a bit of a short cut, but only worth it if you could get past a slower vehicle. Did it once when it was a bit high and the car was crabbing sideways in the flow, but thankfully didn't conk out till I'd made it across

A while later I was draining the gear oil for some reason and the "oil" was 90% water. Mmm, wonder how that could have happened? Didn't seem to do it any harm despite my presumably driving it full of water for quite some time (months)

I managed to video my bike going over in a local ford, would have probably been ok but the dry summer meant loads of green slime had built up on the stones. There bike tyre fally-over skidmarks in the green - I noticed them just as my front wheel went.

Happened to me a few years back. Went tearing through the ford which was on a bend, but failed to note said green slime on the stones. Over I went, much to the hilarity of assembled pedestrians - !
Only my pride damaged, but squelched home with very soggy clothes & trainers - !
