I hadn't heard that story either, but "420" is well enough known that it is often in the list of not allowed words in forums.

It doesn't really matter how it originated, it is now commonplace and has been for many years.

I last encountered anything related to "420" over 40 years ago*, but even I'd heard of "420" as a slang expression. I don't know the exact meaning but I know what it's associated with.

*Unless you count sitting upstairs on a late bus and breathing in, in which case I last encountered it on Friday
