The top layer is cosmetic if its one of those pretty weaves. It'll then get distorted in the mould, then heat will activate the resin part of the pre-preg and the whole shebang will cure solid.

Exactly! Just like the seatposts and bars that are advertised as carbon when, in fact, they are aluminium with a 'cosmetic, pretty weave' as you have mentioned, placed over the top.

Think kitchen units with a veneer face.
