Nobody seems to remember the storm of I think 1967.
I heard a strange noise outside in the early hours and looked out to see a complete garden shed moving at a smart pace down the road at Bowling. I reckoned on damage to the distillery roof so was up early and waiting at our usual builder’s yard for him to arrive. Being first to get him I managed to get our damage fixed first and in any case we were regular customers and paid promptly.😊

Decided to venture out today, passed 3 big trees down before the end of the lane (which is about a mile ) soon gave up counting them as there are lots, most lanes are now passable with care but not clear. Lots of phone and power lines down with some neighbouring villages still without power, saw a couple of large trampolines stuck in hedges which had obviously been moved quite a distance as they were not near any houses!
It was slightly scary listening to the wind howling past the house on Friday night especially seeing how much damage it’s done, looks like I got off fairly lightly really.

The high winds have been followed by snow here, & its frozen onto the minor roads. Going to be interesting getting to work tomorrow

I have grown some winter plumage to keep my face warm - damn effective!

Joking apart, I feel the cold much more since I er hum! became 'follicly challenged'. Even my thinning hair kept my bonce warm to an extent, but since I started shaving the remaining bits off, I've always felt the need for headgear, apart from on warm sunny days.

The best storm I remember had water spouts and tornadoes touch down on morecambe Bay and other places. My gran and mum saw one rip down the road in front of my grans house. The videos of the bay ones were amazing. My gran watched tree branches two of you would be needed to move twirling down the road. No damage though amazingly!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
98mph wind recorded close by. 29000 people still without power. We got off lightly. Garden re arranged and bins emptied resulting in paper confetti from recycling. But 30 hrs without power, no mobile signal, no BT phone landline as we have their new 'improved' digital service, which doesn't allow emergency or any other calls when no power - you are of course advised to use your mobile! We are all electric, heat pump - all off. But we could keep one room warmish with the wood-burner, and heat water in a saucepan on top.
Realised just how useless 'technology' is in these circumstances. Rechargeable torches soon dead. Phones dead. Absolutely no way of communicating in an emergency. Local radio and Northern Powergrid advises to log on to their websites for updates!
The BT 'improvements', in particular, make me really angry!!!

At least in Desmond the landlines all worked.... providing you didn't have a cordless phone or one that needed mains power. I think we went for a day and half before loads of generator trucks arrived to provide power to housing, but the street lights were off for three days until the substation got repaired. It's amazing how dark it can get in a city with no street lights

We only had v light snow here in Oxon, but it's enough moisture to make for dicey riding this morning :-/

Funny how quickly your attention moves - while focusing on staying upright on my commute, I'd completely forgotten about the wind damage 2 days earlier! (until I re-opened this thread).

We were advised to have a spare corded phone handy in case power was off and the cordless could not be used. Needed it a few times in the past particularly when there was no power for 4 days and shorter power cuts were fairly frequent.
Since more lines have been put underground we do not suffer so much nowadays.
