North West Power have been utterly pitiful - 4 cuts (3 long) in 6 days.

As you say - if there is a tree that could fall and damage a line then cut the *loody thing down.
The problem is from before you as people did not like to see power lines and so many were routed through woods because people did not want to look at the bloody things.
The tree situation definitely needs to be sorted out...

BBC report said:
Overnight repairs had been hit by some problems though, with a a restored line in Crosthwaite being taken back down by another falling tree, but he said: "We will make more connections this morning."
Fix a power line broken by a falling tree BEFORE removing other trees ready to fall onto it...!

Out for a ride this morning. The damage to trees is almost unbelievable. Landmark trees hundreds of years old uprooted. Whole copses flattened. Devastation. The landscape has suffered irreversible damage. Not surprising it is taking a long time to restore power in some areas.

Blimey, that sounds very sad. Roughly where are you ?
Mid Northumberland. Some areas untouched, just the odd branches down. Other areas really badly damaged, the loss of the really old mature trees is particularly sad.

this is sobering
Could have been worse. No homes seem to be involved and none of the trees were native. Looks like a post war plantation, so while there will be some habitat loss, new habitat will be created unless they clear the fallen wood. Suspect it was commercially planted so the root balls will have been compromised from the start and the trees were now tall enough to catch strong wind. I dare say the owner will take a hit in the wallet but someone will probably get a decent amount of work out of it.

I was more concerned about the implications for the wider area. This is just one modest wood - Just how badly have others been affected that we haven't seen yet? There's not much helicopter footage on the news, possibly because there's a lot of ferrying materials by helicopter that has airspace.

Walked the dog round the golf course today. Must have encountered a dozen or more
mature trees down. Some trees looking like they've been brought down by on tree crashing into them.

If this is climate change then Jesus we've got tough times ahead.

Yep it would seem so, but then that was pointed out in 1987 and we did not do a lot then rather than talk rubbish about planting palm trees in Durham or similar. So hold on to yer hat.

It will be a huge amount of wasted timber.

Next storm due tonight/tomorrow, storm Barra.
It’s meant to hit the North East around 2pm, 40mph winds and sleet/rain, not looking forward to the school run.
