Sympathies to Mrs A - immune diseases are a pain in the proverbial to live with. Me and my son battle with it too

Tell me more about making your own......

It's not something we do as much as I'd like to and I'm not great with this stuff. We tend to do this on a weekend, especially if we can use the leftovers in a recipe. We also buy nut/rice milk from the shops but it contains extras to preserve so home made is always best IMO. If I had the time to spend on this that I would like to then I think we'd be living on a very clean diet indeed.

It's pretty easy to make. I used a recipe I found online. This kind of thing is good and easy to make. Our cheap blender has no issue with pre-soaked nuts. We buy nuts from Natural Choices in good quantities. You can buy nibbed cashews which are easier to blend as they're in small bits. They're cheaper too. The world food section in supermarkets usually have cashews and almonds at a decent price for a big bag. Vanilla extract is the only expensive part of the recipe. We haven't tried getting fresh vanilla pods but they're not common where we live. The almond milk we made wasn't great but the cashew was very good and we've stuck with that. You end up with the "solids" which are a almost paste like in texture. They can be used as a nut ingredient for other recipes where pre-soaked nuts are required. If I can make a decent almond milk the leftover solids would be great for home made nut and dried fruit bars for post training snacks.

For rice milk soak, add water and blend. You can also boil instead of soaking. Tastes of rice and is very cheap to make. Keeps in the fridge. We've blended with bits of dried fruit to add sweetness. The fast digesting carbs element of the dried fruit is great post exercise or as milk in oatmeal (pour over oatmeal, leave to soak overnight in fridge).

Oatmeal is technically gluten free but is not certified due to the processing methods. There are plenty of chai seed based porridge out there. Some contain oats, some don't.

You can buy gluten free oats and almond, rice or oatmilk doesn't upset my stomach. Dairy and gluten can definitely upset your stomach and make you lethargic. I get alot of my food in the free from range in Sainsbury's except for the bread as it is disgusting lol.

I'm going to have a week off dairy starting this morning and see how I go on. I won't miss milk in tea as I don't mind earl grey or green tea. I will miss cheese and yoghurt tho. I bleeding love gooseberry yoghurt !

Well I have not had any milk at all since my initial post, except for the small amount that I put in my tea. Once again I felt so much better during Sundays bike ride, particularly after dinner when I would usually have experienced the "burn" in my legs. To be honest my stomach is still feeling peculiar though, my appetite is not what it usually is and I feel a little queasy after meals, and the gurgling and rumbling that my stomach makes is most unusual for me. A visit to the docs might be the best idea.
Does anyone know whether the lactose in milk is in any way associated with the lactic acid that builds up in muscles when you begin to tire. Just trying to put two and two together here.
Thanks for all the replies.
