Dear supporters,
We won! The government are backing down on their plans to water down farm animal protection rules.
I can’t believe it. Two weeks ago news broke that the government was planning to hand over animal welfare rules to the industries they were meant to be regulating. If they got their way, millions of British farm animals would be left with no one to look out for them. It was wrong, if not downright cruel - so I started a campaign on the 38 Degrees website.
Thanks so much for signing the petition. I was astonished when it took off so quickly. Watching it hit 100,000 was something I shall never forget. At that point, I really felt we might be in with a chance of getting the government to back down. The strength we had as a group was massively powerful, and I wanted to use it to work with other organisations to get the U-turn.
As it happens, we didn’t need to. The farming ministry announced yesterday that they’d had a rethink. “In light of views raised,” they said, the plans were being shelved. They were hit much harder than they expected by a wave of people-powered opposition and realised they’d got it wrong.
To say I am stunned and elated is an underestimation. Thank you to each and every one of you for speaking up on behalf of the animals who don’t have a voice.
You people are truly an avalanche!
Best wishes,
