Way back when, I went to The Accademia in Florence to see Michaelangelo's David. Not that I knew (or know) anything about art, but the guidebooks said it was a must, so off I went. The David looked like every picture of David you've ever seen, but I was bowled over by these, which line the corridor on the way in:
Apparently they are four of an originally planned 30 sculptures, cut short by the death of the commissioning Pope, now known as the Unfinished Slaves. They are stunning 'in the flesh'...I think they look pretty striking even like this. They've stayed with me for 30+ years....
