By hand I can move the cage easily no restriction at all.
On my other bike there is tension.

Gears perform remarkably well even when the tension on the lower run is poor, providing you ride with care.I don't understand that if this is my problem and its knackered, why did I not get an inkling about it after putting back the chain to complete the ride.
In the context the OP describes, why do you think "it is very likely to be out"?Have you checked rear mech alignment, it is very likely to be out.

Thanks for replying.What happens if you hoik the cage back into its proper position? Does it stay there? If so it could just be a bit of grit in the wrong place.
Which suggest either the spring is broken or it's become unhooked. A new mech is about thirty notes. I'd be checking if the spring is unhooked before I spent money (but I'm tight like that).Thanks for replying.
