The point I'm trying to make is there are a lot of crashes due to riders thinking they're Mark Cavendish when they're racing for indescript places in the race. Admit it, most crashes are at the end of the race due to this very reason.

At cat 3 or 4 level (it might be different higher up) the sprint at the finish isn't when the most crashes happen though, the biggest danger time is when the bunch slows.

That could come under the heading of a pointless exercise. In both meanings of the phrase. Have some respect for yourself and fellow riders, willy waving "I beat you for 17th" is for kids.

The kids tend to be up the road and out of sight when i'm racing

The nice thing about our sport, is there are races withing races, it is also extremely good practise for the time you might find yourself at the pointed end.

I'm sure the people who sprint for every available place base their success on their final position in the race and that's fine if they paid their entry fee they should be able to do what they like as long as its safe and legal.

You could argue that sprinting for sign posts on group rides is pointless as you get nothing for winning but people enjoy doing it apparently.
