If the problem is knotty muscles specifically anything that gets those knots free and blood circulating through the muscles back to the heart is a good thing. A roller will do this as will compression clothing so will a hot bath and hot or cold compresses as will massage. Your injuries give you a particular problem and any therapy that doesn't take that into account could do more harm than good.

Precisely, which is why I would have the massage at the hospital where the operation was done and I've been having physio...so no whale music and essential oils :smile: Just screams and betadine :ohmy: :biggrin:

I try to have regular sports massages. I've found that when I don't have them I get other muscle issues that causes me to need more 'heavy duty' treatment.
The servicing your car analogy is a good one in my opinion.

I'm beginning to get the picture - poor lamb now I know what the essential oil is for.
 
I'd love to go for regular massage once a fortnight or month but I can't really afford it and I'm spending much more on myself (mainly cycling or book related) than my wife does so I'm already getting away with things and don't want to push my luck.
I'm certain of the benefits though.
About a month ago my quads started feeling painful - because I was training by nipping down to Tynemouth and going up and down the hills there (hardly any hills where I live) repeatedly.
I then found this website on youtube - self massage - and do this about three/four times a week and it's made a massive difference. And yes, most of the talk here is about other parts of the body but I've since realised that there's no excuse for not giving my legs a massage - they're easy to reach and I can do it watching telly or something on the computer or at work. Once you've written down a bullet point list of the steps on the video you can just get on with it whenever you want/have the time.

For me it's my calfs that ache. I had a Thai massage, on the beach, a couple of years ago. Just did my legs and I felt great for a few weeks. I could do with going back to that Greek beach every month.

Well, I called my physio today to get her advice, after a chat about my never ending list of ails she has asked to see me in a couple of weeks...I'll ask then about sports massage I guess!

It's crazy, I can row 3000m in under 13 and a half minutes, I can cycle 50+ miles (of course with cake breaks) but I sit at my desk for 30 minutes or in a car and my leg starts to ache like a demon
 
After quite a long running career interspersed with the majority of running ailments, the only thing that kept me running was regular sports massage. So having been on the receiving end for a while I decided to train up.
In my experience it's a very powerful tool, if practiced correctly and at the right time, I also find that alot of people expect a treatment to be very painful (either from past experience, or anecdotally) this simply doesn't have to be the case, a bit of discomfort maybe, but the benefits can and usually are really positive, as in reduced pain /tightness, increased range of movement.
The key is to keep the treatments regular, on a maintainance level if you like, this does help to keep the lid on alot of chronic ailments such as achilles problems, IT bands, etc.
So try a few, you'll be amazed + I've never been so busy ^_^
