I have broken a spoke, almost certainly as a result of a crunchy metal incident on the Fridays' Tour de Normandie. I was about to buy a single replacement, but when I removed the cassette it became apparent that there are five or six others that are sufficiently damaged that they are likely to go ping at any moment. Anyway, I found the identical (Shimano) spokes online, but they are only available as single units at £4 a pop. DT Swiss ones of the same length, however, are £16-£19 for a pack of 18. Can I mix 'em up? the Shimano ones are flat-bladed, and I think the DT ones are round...

Best to replace the lot. BTW they're sold in 18s so you can have the correct length for either side on a 36 hole rear (and some spares if you have less spokes)

Never buy one spoke. If you know you need one buy 3, if you know you need two buy 5 and so on. Guaranteed that if one spoke let's go, it won't be the only one.

Finding the correct length spokes from a skip wheel that are a decent make and in good condition would be next to impossible.

It helps to read the thread. The spokes are a particular length, which might or might happen to be the same as whatever I might or might not happen to find on a non-existent wheel on a non-existent bike in a notional skip. I have 14 spokes on the damaged side. One snapped. Six (the remaining ones in the same position as the snapped one) have comparable gougy damage to the one that snapped. Two of the others are visibly bent. That means I need at least seven spokes, but it would make sense to replace all nine damaged ones. Bought individually that would be £36 plus postage. I can buy 18 for £16 including postage. This is enough to replace all the drive side spokes, leaving four new spares, and keeping the apparently undamaged but differently-shaped five as further spares.

You're into nearly re-building the wheel with this, so you'll need to set up some kind of jig to make sure it stays round and true. Old forks with zip ties and watch the wheel dish too.

Yes you can put different spokes on. When building rear wheels, Spa cycles routinely put butted spokes on the non-drive side and plain on the drive side. Other people argue that this is a madness however.
I got my wheelbuilder to lace one up like that for the Ridgeback, his comment "You've been on that internet again" but he did it for me.
It is supposed to balance spoke tension on a touring bike and help stop brake rub when heavily laden, been going strong for about 8 yrs (I haven't ridden any of my 2 wheelers for the last year and 8 months though due to my injury but am about to try soon)
