+1 from me speed doe's it really matter if all you can do is !!!! my thought on it well ok I got there ok and whats more important I also got back with several kilos of shopping so bah humbug.

Well if we're talking weight carrying........I'm lugging me about!!!

I have gone from about 12 mph average to 15 mph average over the same routes in a year. That's
what my Garmin tells me. Good to know but I still enjoy my rides to the same degree. I do not try to go out to beat my times, i go out because a) I enjoy riding and b) I enjoy riding,

So yes, now I am fitter and hence faster but for me it is just about loving the ride. Don't worry about what others can manage unless you want to ride competitively, ride longer as your fitness gets better, enjoy it and you will by default ride faster. And if you never hit those speeds does it really matter as long as you have a great time?

Just keep training. I averaged 10 mph when I first got my road bike a year ago. Now I'm up to 15 mph on flat terrain. Just takes time and practice.

I would dream of having that as my average speed, in reality I doubt my average is in double figures (I go very very slowly up hills!) .... I can do that speed on the flat ... but that would be more like a top speed and being able to sustain it.... not a chance!

They must have forgotten to fit the turbo to your bike as well as mine

Seriously, most who can consistently average 19mph are young, fit guys who train hard and consistently.

Afraid, if you are anything like me it is something to be admired and, yes slightly envious of, but it is just not going to happen to a 54 year old menopausal woman

You will still make improvements though......give it time. When I started end of August last year my first few rides were around 14 miles at barely 12mph and I thought 20 miles sounded a huge distance. Now, I regularly do anything between 20 and 50 most mornings and I'm starting to get averages between 14.5mph to just over 15mph on a good day. Whether I can make any further progress remains to be seen but I am reasonably happy so far.

Stick in there.
Still room/time for improvement, iirc the two fastest riders from DCC in a recent 25mile TT were in their late 50s, early 60s and those two are consistently top 2 in TT's.

I hope so. I'm not blessed with sporting genes but I am quite competitive and like to push myself. Really just ride for fresh air, fun and fitness but I like to do as well as I can too.

I read on here that many of you average about 19 mph, i can only manage between 12 - 20kph (on flat) what am i doing wrong and should i worry, i do push myself could i be in wrong gear or is it just old age !!
How long have been cycling? That information is important because some of us have been doing it for years and even decades, if you've only just started out then don't expect to get up to those speeds straight away, it takes time.

The old advice used to always be that you need 3 years of regular riding under your belt before you could genuinely call yourself cycle fit. Based on my own experience, I would agree.

But the important thing is to enjoy the journey. Average speed is only important if you want to cycle competitively. If not, just relax and enjoy and you will find you get quicker with time in the saddle anyway.

It depends on what you are riding as well. 12mph average on an MTB isn't too bad.
