Record the race and watch the interesting parts and skip the drivel we don't all have all day like noods does lol

How you gonna know what bit is interesting? Or do you mean just watch to see who crosses the line first? Nobber. :boxing:

Plus when i hear ITV4 daft TDF theme tune it always brings a smile to my face.

My wife, who is not a cyclist, does a ridiculous dance to that song. I'll have to tape her doing it next year.

You are not "expected" to watch anything.

.

My apologies. You are right. I was lazy with my language. There is no expectation. I ought to have written "we are offered" or similar.

I quite understand that some people like to watch an entire stage from the DR. Perhaps some of us grow to like what we first got accustomed to - and for me that was the radio and newspaper.

I love to watch a little cycling on George. I'll never complain that there's too much, but I imagine it can be overwhelming for someone new to it.

I'm not really interested in any sport but sometimes watch big events - world cup, olympics, Wimbledon, etc. I quite enjoy the game but it's not like I wouldn't drop it to go to the pub if someone calls.

Cycling is the only real 'sport' I do, but it's purely a fun/recreational/health/commuting pursuit. Don't play football, tennis, rugby, cricket...

But you would then think that out of all the sport on TV for things I don't do, cycling would be the one I would maybe take an interest.

I've tried to watch the TDF and the cycling during the Olympis but I just don't get it!!

What am I missing here? Please don't take this as in anyway dismissive and no offence meant.

I was the same as you, enjoy cycling but had no interest in watching it - until recently. I think a combination of me taking it a little more seriously (joining a club), reading about it more (David Millar, Ned Boulting, etc) and my cycling mates talking about it spiked my interest. Started watching the TdF highlights show, my OH even got into it! (and she can't stand sport). Once you realise the endeavours required, the team tactics, the shared experience of the Peloton, the sense of working together whilst still competing against each other and the sheer balls of the protagonists it's hard to beat as a sport.

When I have the time I have to say it feels like cheating to watch the TDF highlights on ITV; a lot of the significant stuff is lost, who gets away and who doesn't and for what reason. I feel the condensing of a stage into the 40 odd minutes that ITV give is handy in one sense but leads to sweeping generalisations regarding the race, unsurprisingly.

When you watch a stage unfold, it's much easier to understand the hell that some riders go through just doing their daily job. Cavendish as we all know is a sprinter but he has to get there first, sometimes over hills and sometimes not but the team work together and can easily be thwarted, but to have the energy left to do that? ITV coverage of 40 minutes - and I know this is coming from the other extreme end - almost makes a mockery of that effort, because you're only really watching the result (almost like a full-time footie score).

I think the TV coverage assumes that the watcher understands all the different jerseys and how there are races within races but to the outside person it is confusing. I'm always having to explain why "people don't try" in stage races to friends who don't watch too much cycling.

Most other sports are a lot easier to understand.
