It's just that no one wants to be the first.

I respectfully suggest you look again at the attire of your fellow cyclists! There are many without padded shorts, as has always been the case. The increase in numbers cycling in the UK has definitely meant more people are wearing the kit but look equally for those bods that don't.

It was very much one of the refreshing aspects for me to see when I was last in the UK last month. That is, the number of non 'lycra brigade' cyclists on the road.

First the indelicate question. Are you wearing anything under the shorts? You aren't meant to ...

I have heard a lot of people say that as well. i always wear underwear underneath lycra. it doesnt do anything to me at all. just keeps my bum a bit warmer.

Nothing under the shorts - that's what the pad is for - it's to stop chafing. If you've got grundies under there you are asking for trouble. Grundies generally being cotton, will absorb sweat etc. etc.

PS back to the OP - have you got a gel saddle - if so bin it. Good idea in principal, but you tend to sink into them, so the bits you are meant not to sit on, are sat on. Less padding the better.

Is the original saddle that came with my bike. It's a giant mtb. Looking to get either a road bike or tourer in the new year. Hopefully a**e will be better condition by then.

Ugh! You mean it makes your bum sweat?

Lose those shreddies and get with it, Dude.

You get used to it. At first I could sit in my road saddle for more than twenty minutes without it hurting - and lasting for a day or so! Now I can stay in it all day and feel comfortable and have no lasting effects.

However, four hours on a mountain bike the other day, doing actual mountain biking over rough terrain on a hard tail, and my arse was back to aching! I figure it's all just getting used to it - if I do a bit more MTBing, I'll be more like the mate I went with who was perfectly fine!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I used to be very uncomfortable on my bike untill i got my saddle set up right as well.

For me this involved getting my saddle height and how far back it was on the rails along with getting the saddle dead level by using a spirit level.

Good shorts also help, the best "cheap " ones i have found are the ones from decathlon as the padding is good and they actually come in sizes that i can get my legs into comfortably.Good for up to 40 miles i found

There is only one answer, Brooks!

There may be some that gainsay the answer, ignore them!

And the other answer is...not a Brooks

Actually, it depends - I sit towards the back of the saddle (well...on a Flite it's the only bit with much padding, but mebbe further back than most from habit). But if I transfer that position to a Brooks I just wind up sitting mostly on the metal rail at the back, and don't gain anything from the suspended leather in front of it.

If I haven't been on the flite for some weeks it takes a good week to be used to it again - and I can wear padless tights on it too without any problem...
