Not sure on this one....if the front derailleur is working ok and changing up and down ok it would still be worth giving it and the cables a good lube. Thinking that if the cable is dirty or rusty it may hold the derailleur for a few seconds before before it frees off. Also may need cable adjusting slightly tighter to hold it in the position it requires. Other possibilities are chain wear or chainset wear / damaged....

I don't think it's the chain, this is fairly new, the chainrings are about 4000miles old but I don't think they are the problem. I think I'll take the front derailer off, clean it and re fit it with a new cable... when in doubt take it apart and put it back together lol

Have u checked the chainring bolts are tight where they secure on to the spider? If they are loose the chainring may wobble causing odd shifting. Also check the crank bolt is tight on the drive side for the same reason.

Not quite the same problem as the original poster, but also a front derailier problem. Having read the thread above I may just be choosing bad gears, i.e. big ring on the front and rear. Anyway it seems to be getting worse so here it is. My chain sometimes randomly comes off when in the lower 3 gears when running the outer chain ring. I've tried adjusting the front derailier but with no result. generally my gears shift well but every once in a while the chain drops off- not whilst shifting but after, ussually under slight effort. It goes back on just by peadling. Any ideas?

I wouldn't recommend crossing the chain Andy I.E what I mean by that is running on the largest chainring at the front and the largest on the rear or vice versa. This will cause your chain to stretch and wear out quicker.

Turns out it was the BB being shot that was the problem, but the same effect in causing odd movement. All fixed now and back to full reliability
