Somethings up with my rear wheel

As I put the bikes on the roof mounted cycle carrier on Friday I noticed that there was side to side movement in my mtb back wheel centering around the spindle.
Got to our destination in Wales and took the back wheel off to see that the wheel was moving on the spindle (non qr).
I tightened up the spindle 'til the wheel wouldn't spin on it and then backed it off 'til the wheel span freely but didn't have any side to side movement on the spindle.
However I found that when I reassembled the wheel/spindle to the frame it was clear that the wheel wasn't spinning freely so with lots of adjustment of the spindle nuts and the wheel to frame nuts I managed to get the balance of the wheel spinning freely and yet adequately secured to the frame.
We went out and did a short circular ride only 7 miles and all tarmac. Haven't ridden again over the wkend due to the extreme windy conditions.
Yet today I got my bike to put back on the car and found the back wheel moving side to side on the spindle again.
Is ther ea proper way for me to deal with this problem?
The bikes about 6 weeks old and I bought it out of the wifes catalogue, I've done about 300 miles on it.

I'd appreciate any advice on this please as I really am getting into my cycling again and feeling great due to the exercise but I'm worried whether I should ride the bike in this condition?

Thanks Nath

Did you tighten the main wheelnuts or the cone locknuts Nath ? (main wheelnuts on the outside of the frame, cone locknuts on the inside of the frame)
If it was the main wheelnuts, you wont have solved anything because it sounds like the cone is loose, has come out of adjustment and allows the wheel to wobble.
If you tightened the cone locknut, you may not have locked it against the cone and its come out of adjustment again (assuming there's not something more serious wrong)
At the end of the day, it sounds like a new bike, so i'd be taking or sending it back, that just shouldnt happen.
I wouldnt ride it either, you're going to damage it perhaps even more.

A bearing cone has become separated from the locknut that's supposed to stop it unscrewing. Adjusting the bearing cones is quite a tricky job and not really for the amateur. It also helps if you have some cone spanners. If you're not fully confident I suggest you take the wheel to a bike shop.

Thanks for the comments guys.

After using the car for work yesterday and again this morning I decided to take another lok at the wheel and spindle. I ended up calling the lbs and I took the wheel down there.

He sorted it for me FOC adding that I should just see how it goes as I may have bent the spindle as I've managed to lightly buckle the wheel.

So anyway I managed a short ride this afternoon and it was great and I'm hoping to try and get a few more road miles in tomorrw as my confidence is now growing.

Thanks Nathan
