What's wrong with my pump?

Dont use regular grease, use silicone lube from the plumbing department of B&Q. It comes in a tub (looks like vaseline) - or a aerosol spray.

Ah, that'd also be good for lubricating the tuning slides on brass instruments. Top tip, thanks.

Well, thanks again all, definitely saved my bacon - punctured on the way in this morning! Pump worked perfectly.

Glad it's worked for you this time! I like the lezyne pumps for much this reason - their general serviceability means that with a bit of routine (currently every other year or so) maintenance I can be assured they will keep working.

So, it turns out the main seal o ring is completely detached and stuck at the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe lack of grease on o-ring meant excess friction when pumping which just rolled it off?

Top tip, I remove my pump each time I clean/wash my bike, before clipping it back in I give it a few pumps to clear any moisture and check for operation.
