Let me start by saying g firstly I'm a tight arse and don't like the idea of paying gym memberships and also when I did join one I was bored senseless alone cos everyone I know doesn't like exercise . What I'd like is something to do in conjunction with cycling and maybe something I could do with my wife ( keep it clean fellas) as she's trying to loose weight .
Swimming is the only thing that can think of ,but our pool is about 2 miles away and in winter although the walk is not far cold weather can change peoples mindset towards exercise .I could cycle there , but my wife doesn't ever want to ride a bike .So basically what could I do to get fitter as well as cycle to get fitter any suggestions will do and ideas on winter alternatives for the non cyclist we can do as a couple would be good too

You need to decide if you want to get better at cycling, in which case the answer is do more cycling. Or if you want to get better at swimming, the answer for most is going to be do an adult improvers class and just keep swimming.

No harm in doing both, as long as one doesn't hold you back from the other.

I want to get fitter loose the beer gut stop the gagging for air when pushed . I love cycling and wish I'd done it years ago , but now I want goals , I want to be fitter hey maybe do a triathlon basically tone up a bit .
I don't want to be some crazy big muscle bloke , but improving what I got seems doable .I'm a 5'6 bloke weighing in at 10'11 and tbh apart from the podge belly I don't look so bad , but at 48 I'm struggling a bit cardio wise and get out of breath in certain situations

Used to attend a spin class 4 nights a week ... through the winter couple of years ago at a local council run Gym
Used to see a lot of couples playing badminton together .. tryed to get my mrs to do it after spin !
Or train on a turbo trainer for your self ....

Then go do some form of activity,a triathlon has 3 disciplines  You sound like you're looking a quick fix when none exist. Get out and do it

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Do a brisk walk to the pool, don't bother with the swim, then do a brisk walk back?

I'm joking - a swim would be great, but even just a regular brisk walk would be pretty good for you and your wife. Aim to do 4+ mph.

Cold and/or wet weather is just a clothing issue.

Post-illness, I got my fitness back through walking. When I was eventually able to get back on my bike I was able to do 20+ mile hilly rides after only a week or two of cycling.

Nah mate I'm old enough to know there's no such thing as a quick fix . What I am looking for is something that targets the beer belly , but also builds cardio and stops the breathlessness . Its weird 4 rides in I bang out 22 miles on a canal towpath no problem and trust me the surface wasn't pretty , but I get out of breath running about a bit and I want to change that .
Next month I'm cutting out coke because I drink silly amounts and its showing , I like a beer too so that's reducing . Just to show you why I need to change me and the wife worked out my calories on a beer day and I managed to consume 5685

The answers are in front of you Colin. Why wait until next month to cut coke? DO IT NOW! You're only holding yourself back
Cos I got 2 bottles and I'm a tight arse lol . Nah seriously I get paid monthly so I'm having fun till then and then I start .

Play some kind of sport that is based around a game. Squash or Badminton are ideal for the winter because you can play them in the warm and dry!

I play Badminton all the year around, and you find yourself paying so much attention to the game, that your often end up having a great cardio-vascular work-out without even realising it! Often come off court blowing out of my backside and sweating like an Eskimo in the tropics!

I. cycle, weight-lift, play a little tennis and play Badminton twice a week; out of all those - judging from my inability to walk the day after I've played - have to say that Badminton takes the most toll on my 54 year old body!

Living at the top of a steep 2 mile climb
I use a turbo to help with my breathing, & have a set of dumbbells to get body exercise when I'm not riding & after time off the bike to get back enough fitness to go ride.
Cost = much less than gym membership. Your other half could also use them, & you could even do exercises together without even leaving home.
N.B. Note I said dumbbells not barbells.
