+1 for badminton... but all that lunging kills your knees.

if you want to lose pud quick start running the cardio also helps on hills with the bike I found. Not that I run much now since commuting to work just don't the time or energy to spare

I'd also say badminton is a great sport. You can do anything from a gentle rally without too much movement, to a going mental and darting about the whole court! I really enjoy it. You don't need anything flash, just a couple of cheap rackets and some shuttle cocks. As others have said it's indoors and warm. Plus a bit of competition between you both can make it extra fun.

If you have space for a bag or somebody to hold pads for you/switch with, I recommend doing a session of some boxing combos along with pressups, burpees and other plyo exercises. It really cranks the heart rate (you obviously can judge the intensity) and improves cardio and overall fitness no end. It complements cycling nicely being completely different. Whether the wife would be up for it or not is another question- I know a lot of ladies into it however.

Otherwise I agree badminton or squash could be a shout :-)

Food helps with this bit. There's many many threads on this already so I won't try and tangent this one

I want to be fitter hey maybe do a triathlon basically tone up a bit.

Swimming or running then ;). In reality if you want to improve on more intense efforts then this is what you should be training for along with the longer, easier rides. All of the suggestions above are good. Training for intensity can be done on the bike, running, swimming, calisthenics or sports such as badminton, squash which give bursts of high intensity output. etc as suggested above. If you want cycle specific then spin classes can be great or riding intervals on your bike.
