Er...surely the inflated width of the tyre is never going to be exactly as described because it's determined by the width of the rim?

How wide is it at the contact point when riding it.

True story: I once got taken out by a GF in her car. We set off down the road and straight away I heard a bump bump bump from a wheel. Told her to stop and jumped out to investigate - lo and behold one of the tyres had a massive bulge the size of an ostrich egg and was ringing fit to burst. "Blimey! What pressure is in this tyre?" sez I. "I dunno," she replies, "I just top them up every week." !!!!
Girl at work complained her 12v tyre Inflator was not inflating, just whirring away. I suspected the bung had blown out the pump (its there to pop out if you overinflate)..and it was so when I stripped it down.
'How much pressure do you put in your tyres ?'
'50psi i think, it says the right amount on the tyre'
'Bloody hell ! No wonder its popped!!...you get good economy ?
'Why ?'
i explained to her the consequences of overinflating tyres, accererated wear, poor handling...and blown tyre inflators. But on the good side, your consumptiom must be very good
'Oh,...'

Gotta love the fact that the OP has shown off himself, his bikes, his tours - but suspiciously doesn't display his bulge.

Call me an old cynic but I think someone with so much to show off, and who has achieved so much - probably sorts his bulge out multiple times daily.

If not you have to question the veracity of his "tours" and bikes.

So, what causes this?
From another thread:
Tyres are composites. At the most basic, they are a rubber-threads-rubber sandwich. The threads give strength and stop the tyre expanding in the same way as the tube that fills it. The rubber provides a wearing, gripping face, and holds the threads in alignment so that they can do their job.
Ergo, a bulge is probably indicative of broken threads. I wouldn't ride it much further on that tyre. The load (pressure) is being progressively transferred to neighbouring threads, which will also break, until the whole tyre is one big bulge, at which point it goes bang.

That's exactly what happened to me!

I ran 2 specialized tubeless ready tyres with Stans fluid, the back bulged & delaminated, the front is still on 2 years later, I blame the flexing of the rear tyre allowing the Stans into the threads, the front having less flex stayed intact.

..a long way from somewhere called Home..
Had 2 Aksion tyres last about 3000 miles so bought another 4 and 3 developed bulges in first few weeks of use , got refunded for two but only after taking out an ebay dispute against the bike shop seller , wont be buying any more .

happened to me last week....same bulge. I over inflated a Schwalbe Lugano (cheapo road tyre)....not by much..but its cooked and needs binning.

Schwalbe Lugano

well that's bloody wonderful .........got both on my Peugeots...:cursing:
living on borrowed time it would seem

off to lower psi to minimum

Interesting, I wonder if it could be a bad batch. With my Lugano it looked like the rubber holding the threads in place had failed rather than the threads snapping. Was much more obvious what was happening when looking from the inside.
