Never suffered it on the bike tours at all and some of them were tough for me.Have on my commutes on the odd occasion but that's probably down to diet.

As others have said, sometimes your body isn't on top form and it randomly catches you out. It's like your first clipless moment after years of clipping out without a problem.

Gti Junior has learned that if he gets up and eats a bowl of cardboard laced with sugar, otherwise known as breakfast cereal, he will bonk within 90 minutes. Nowadays he's being more careful to eat some brown toast with butter and marmalade as well.

Really?
I can imagine people having one moment, two at the very most and learn from it.. but a few? Blimey.
First one was in week one of cycling......just forgot I was in them.
2nd one at 1 mph......just starting off behind a mate and he braked.....I fell to the right and of course that was the side clipped in.....quite funny really.
3rd one last week when a stationary car just pulled out with no indication. He forced me into a fence which I bounced off. I managed to unclip one side but fell the other way.

Could be the cumulative effect of several previous rides.
Rest is important.

Could be dehydration or not enough food.

Combination of all of the above.

carry some emergency high energy food and plenty of water.
Good days and bad days occur for no apparent reason sometimes.

That's a good thought. The first time I started commuting 12 miles each way, it was on the way home on Wednesday I ran out of puff and had to sit beside the road for several minutes.

As the weather is warming up, Id bet it's heat related. It doesn't have to be hot. It's all down to air temperature, humidity, what you are wearing, how hard you are working, what you are accustomed too, etc.

it can happen unexpectedly; one time i bonked on a club run despite adequate nutrition, a distance i had done many times over and feeling fine up to the cafe stop. still no idea why, and it remains the only time i've been 'rescued' by the 'team car'
