I could not feed my family on ready meals but I guess smaller families may be better off financially
Not sure about that , I'm single but cook everything from scratch . Once you have bought the ingredients a lot of it lasts for more than one meal . Personally i think its just laziness .
Take the pizza mentioned above . OK i probably cant beat the price but i can have more of a pizza than that offering . I often do them for lunch out of puff pastry , mozzarella , ham , pepperoni and tomato puree . I probably chuck more on if i have stuff around but i can make six lunch pizzas for about £5-6
My mate goes to KFC for chicken and chips to feed 7 of them . God knows what it costs but i cant help thinking if they like chicken then just roast a chicken in the oven .
The same with burgers , 200g of steak mince is £3 . That will make 5-6 fat burgers .
Donna kebabs after a beer on the other hand is fine .

It's a bit more complicated than that...

They've been looking at that kind of thing for about 10 years now

I almost applied for a school nurse job which would involve working with the team who deliver the healthy child programme. In the end I took the prison nurse job because I would rather face prisoners than an angry parent who has just received a letter telling them their child is fat.

A person after my own heart. ! We buy a pile of ingredients to make loads of meals. I was not sure if it was better for smaller families or singles to buy those aweful ready meals from a financial point of view, I know they have no health benefits ! The good thing about our market is we have our regular stalls and they know us by name and give us extra or just reduce the whole cost of the shop.

I actually shop at my local tesco metro so probably pay over the odds for the food plus its almost impossible to buy food for one . Everything is packaged for two or more people so i need to juggle what i buy .
Spag bol made fresh will last me two days and i could probably have lunch with it and a jacket potato but i dont normally fancy it for evening meals and lunch . £3.79 for 2 big meals . I normally have all the other stuff to go with it but yes now and then you have to factor that in .
If i do a roast on Sunday the meat will last me until Wednesday , i can have that cold for an evening meal , put it a wrap or sarnie for lunch , curry it , stew it , stir fry it or just pick at it when i want .
I think it really is down to people just cant be bothered to cook . I have no idea why as its the easiest thing in the world to get right .

But ready meals are full of crap and taste like that aswell ! They are the main reason there are so many people are in healthy. I agree not everyone has time to shop at markets and then create a masterpiece but if my ten year old can cook a dish then I am sure most adults can learn. I could not feed my family on ready meals but I guess smaller families may be better off financially but not in the health stakes. I will be sticking to what we do, it works for us
I'm not saying it's not crap, I'm just saying it's cheap.

Let the record show that I think ready meals are crap.

Hell, I even make my pizza dough using wild yeast. Sort of the opposite to ready meals

(though now I think of it. £1 for a small pizza with a little tomato and cheese is actually quite expensive compared to buying flour and making your own)

£3.79 for 2 big meals.

£3.79 for 2 big meals vs £1 for a Vesta pie or 90p for a portion of chips or 99p for a Maccy D's cheeseburger.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone whose budget is £1 per meal. Which do you choose?

On a bed of puy lentils and spinach, no doubt; keep those chiselled looks

or shizzled looks, I can't recall.

If i put it into cheese burger portions i think i could get six meals out of it but you would have to add the home made bread .
I would also buy 2KG of potatoes for £1 and eat home made chips when ever i wanted :okay:

The Human body, and all of its systems, are geared towards hunter gathering. The availability of food, and the calorific content, are so good now, unless kids are kept active, they are going to end up as obese, type 2 diabetes ridden Jabba the hut tribute acts.

SRW, It is not only the poor who are obese.

Maybe not, but they have a valid financial reason for being so. I work near a road lined with umpteen fast food outlets, at school out time they are jam packed with families. For £10 you can feed 4 kids, they'll be full but of course have had little nutrition.

I could feed four adults for £10 if i cooked the meal . In fact i think i could do three courses for £10 .

"When you are underfed, harassed, bored, and miserable, you don’t want to eat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit ‘tasty’. There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you. Let’s have three pennorth of chips! Run out and buy us a twopenny ice-cream! Put the kettle on and we’ll all have a nice cup of tea!"
