Would you say there was a hi percentage of fast food outlets in your area ?

I know of a place in the south where there are s**t loads of independent fast food joints and the locals are mostly obese (this is not my personal view, it was reported in the national news from medical statistics). It's easy to say that the food outlets have created "fed" the issue, but the people are wanting the products.

A fair percentage of the people both old and young here in this rural village are fat, we have only just got a chip shop. So that does not seem to stack that well with a high level of fast food places.

I work in a high school....or secondary school in old money and there are loads of obese children which is a shame because I do think they are doomed unless their parents actually take hold of the reigns and actually care for them ! I have four daughters who eat what we eat but are allowed treats just like me and my good lady and they are healthy and not overweight. I get annoyed when you see these programmes on TV where there is a big lump of a parent sat on the coach with a fag in their mouth moaning they cannot eat healthy because it is too expensive ! I am sure the ready meals they are stuffing themselves and their kids with are far more expensive than good old homemade dishes with ingredients bought from markets.....and that includes the super food called fruit ! We can feed a family of six healthy food on a budget, so why is it so hard for some to accept that ? And as for it takes too long or its difficult to make stuff from scratch,my Wife has taught our 10 year old how to make Spag-Boll and chilli con carne on her own ! Its all down to how they are brought up,its not the state or the schools fault,we have kids and we should look after them and care for their health !

Visited our niece and nephew over the weekend, aged 9 and 7.
They are both slim and active but have good appetites.
They are taken to school and collected in the car as mum and dad both work and time dictates. They also swim, play football, cycle and do "ninja" classes. :bicycle: :boxing:
We have learned not to ask them where they want to eat out for a treat, as it's always McDonalds .
Not because it's their favourite but because they rarely get to go.
They're equally happy eating Chinese or sushi (xx() so the adults decide .

That's sadly not true. Oh, I guess if you can get to markets while they are open and you have room to store, you might pick up bargains, but I've been in Tescos buying ingredients for a lasagne, and noticed their homebrand/value lasagne ready meal was much cheaper than the basket load of ingredients I had. I wondered how this could possibly be true, but shortly afterwards the horsemeat scandal answered that question. And I don't think lasagne is the cheapest ready meal.

So yes, for time poor, money poor and skills poor (so many people no longer know how to cook) ready meals seem like a solution.

I agree. There's a myth that proper food is cheaper but often the cheapest ready made food (it does look pretty disgusting) is cheaper than the ingredients to make it properly.

Here 2 kids pizzas for £1.10. I bet you'd struggle to make you own for that price.

Certainly compared to what is was like, say, 25 years ago e.g. 33 years ago we lived on the main road leading to town and I think there were perhaps 2 chip shops. Now there must be (I am estimating) 20-25 on the same stretch. Town centre is, of course, full of them.

I tried to find the cheapest mince beef at tescos to see if it was still more expensive to make your own, and this turns out to be the cheapest item containing mince beef, at £1

Me & my Bro were saying something similar a while ago (children of the 40s & 50s) e.g. bread & dripping for lunch. A guess but surely its down to lifestyle.........lack of exercise etc.

But ready meals are full of crap and taste like that aswell ! They are the main reason there are so many people are unhealthy. I agree not everyone has time to shop at markets and then create a masterpiece but if my ten year old can cook a dish then I am sure most adults can learn. I could not feed my family on ready meals but I guess smaller families may be better off financially but not in the health stakes. I will be sticking to what we do, it works for us

I had a tin of Fanta and a packet of Cheese Doritos for breakfast. You can all stick your holier than thou nobbery up yer jacksies.
Well that is the difference. On a diet of Fanta & Doritos.......in a few years time I doubt you could reach your jacksie to "stick it up"
