Can you take a picture of the side plates from both sides? Doesn't look like the plates have cracked so most likely is a joining fault. If I remember correctly, the dedicated Shimano joining pin is black on one side.

Now pulled the road bike out of the garage after 4 years & that needs a chain. It's a Giant Defy 5 I think from 2011. It's a 3x8 Shimano is there an obvious chain or do I need to take off & count the links?

I'm pretty sure the KMC Z7 is for a 7 speed drivetrain, one of my bikes is a 7 speed, that's the chain I buy for it.
You need an 8 speed chain from KMC, that's what I buy for my 8 speed bike
I just checked a spare KMC Z7 in the toolbox, says on the box up to 21 speed, you have 24.

Google for 8 speed bike chain?
It's probably the KMC Z8 or X8.
Sorry, I don't have a spare one to look at the box for you.

Not quite. Slightly narrower, but I just buy 8 speed for 7/8 (not sure you can get many 7 speed chains - very few).

I run a 9 speed Dura Ace chain on my 8 speed Dura Ace !

It say's Narrow on the link, so will be fine. I tend to get the higher end X series (usually about £15) as they are all shiny silver ! Can't beat bling.
