Cheers for the ideas everyone, i'll give some of them a go. I've never made a casserole before, but was thinking I could just brown off some meat and onions, shack it in the slow cooker, with a tin of chopped tomatoes, root vegetables and herbs (maybe a bay leaf?)

If you like curry check my Lamb Handi recipe in the recipe thread. That's perfect for a slow cooker, and those packs of Sainsbury stewing lamb are only £4.50 each, serves 4 easily. You can modify the spices as long as you use mostly garam massala.

Coat about a pound of stewing beef in seasoned flour, and bang it in the slow cooker. Fry off some onions and a few rashers of streaky bacon and put them in the slow cooker too. Pour nearly all of a can of guinness into the frying pan and stir it round until it boils gently, scraping up all the nice flavourome burnt bits on the bottom of the pan. Pour this into the slow cooker, add salt and pepper and a squeeze of tomato ketchup (or puree, if you're posh), put the lid on and go cycling for the day. When you come back, chop some mushrooms, fry them in butter then stick them in the slow cooker with the stew for an hour or so. Then serve with mash and giant Yorkshire puddings. Yum.

I love Stovies in slow cooker:

4 pieces of steak slice quartered
8 potatoes quartered
3 carrots sliced
wee bit of turnip
8 onions halved

Chuck it all in with a wee drop water and 2 oxo cubes, splash of tobasco, wocester sauce and tblsp of tomato and brown sauce then cook on low. Yummy1

Sounds very nice, I hadn't thought of cooking curries in it, great shout!
They are wonderful for curries. If I'm not in a hurry I'll use fresh veg and individual spices, but here is my works-every-time meal when I'm out for an all day winter ride on the bike and want to open the door and find someone has cooked my tea, even if that was me.

- slack handful of goat back
- spoonful of Patak's paste, (pick your preferred flavour and strength)
- tin of Natco mixed veg (usually aubergine, tomato, pepper)
- dash of water
- lid.
Preparation time 2 minutes including flicking the switch. Then a cupful of Basmati steams while I'm in the shower in the evening. I use one of these http://www.hollandho...asket_580_9.php and find that it makes perfect rice every time. 5 mins in boiling water, rinse, tip into basket, steam for 5+ minutes.

We used to have pork and lentil casserole:

saute onion, and diced up belly pork (it's like chunky streaky bacon, but uncured, and usually pretty cheap)

Bung in the slow cooker with chopped up carrot, and lentils (the orange sort), then pour in stock to cover, and cook.

Sorry it's not precise, I don't have the recipe to hand.

We'd have it one day as a casserole, with potatoes and a green veg, and then reheated the next night bulked up with some tinned tomato, and on rice. I guess you could add curry type spice if you liked.

Lentils are fantastic in a slow cooker, you can also combine them with smoked pork hock (dirt cheap and oh so tasty). Cook the hock overnight in the slow cooker, fish them out and then cook the lentils during the day using the stock from the hocks and a tin of tomatoes. Add the hock meat for the last hour, I find one hock does 2 of us
