I'd heard that odd medicinal products had been found in the bins of some team hotels. Didn't know that it was specifically Astana though. Is there a source for this?

Astana are included in the teams being investigated by French officials, rather than it only being Astana. But there are some French articles specifically mentioning Astana so that it could be interpreted that no other teams were also involved.

At the Tour de France, organiser Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) provides the teams with special containers to collect medical waste. The Central Office against environmental damage and public health (OCLAESP) has opened the proceedings after discovering several "suspect" syringes in the containers that belonged to the Astana team during the race.

Would Astana really put "suspect" syringes in an official box and hand them over to the authorities?

It does seem a bit unlikely. I suspect that this'll turn out to be a damp squib like the dopage story last week.

I'm sure we've been here before, with investigators picking through hotel rubbish.

This will come to nothing. Unless AFLD can get a positive sample of Naughty Stuff from a syringe AND a strong DNA sample which can be connected to a rider then all the team have to do is shrug and say "not us and you can't prove otherwise". They won't be the slightest bit worried.

The very worst/best that can happen is that a few teams might take a little more care in the disposal of medical equipment.
