Did a ride of nigh-on 15 miles this afternoon. Nothing amazing about that. Apart from here on the East Coast it was darned cold and very blustery - and I did question whether I could really be bothered. *This being my first go ever at being a Winter Cyclist: so cut me a little slack…😁

Instead I gee’d myself along, wrapped up with numerous thin layers. Tried thin: liner gloves under the Winter outers for the first time [Much better !]. And do you know the biggest thing was: for the first time ever I dared to put one ear-bud in to listen to some music on the ride (Left ear - so I had half a chance of hearing the traffic]. And of course had the volume pretty low.

I think this somewhat ‘revolutionised’ what could have been a cold, miserable, solitary ride ! 😎

**Normal stuff for many I’m sure. I’ve never claimed to be sharp………🤣

Another Charge Spoon (Or Madison Flux…..same Seat effectively) arrived today for the original / cheap [🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣] beater. I now have this same seat on my 4 ridden bikes. My butt will thank me I’m sure……

IMG_7164.jpeg

I - with the help of the Postie - also finally completed the “Riding kit” for same bike today. The Zefal Tool bottle is only a medium size. But I’ve managed to cram in:

New inner tube
CO2 bottle
Bottle Adaptor / Valve
5 x Park Tools glue-less patches
Schrader to Presta Adaptor
£1 coins
2 x Park Tools tyre levers
Pair of thick, dimpled rubber gloves

IMG_7163.jpeg

I also run a few pairs of the same double-bearing pedals. Which have an end cap to protect said bearings from crud. Of which one has fallen out on a ride. Some careful measuring with a vernier Caliper tells me these will be a perfect plug. At £10 for 3 it’s probably cheaper to replace the bearings when required. But my mechanical sympathy couldn’t go along with that Mantra……..

Looking forward to a new route this weekend 🚲

Full crank kit: Inc arms, bottom bracket, chainrings etc fitted today. Along with new front mech. Gear change is oh-so-sweet now 👌 Even the Technician in the bike shop commented that on the test ride - it rode way better than he imagined for a Carrera……

IMG_7185.jpeg

I’ve got it home, swapped the seat over, put the lights and drinks bottle and tool kit back on:

Then after being told I needed some of this below by same (Commission based ? 🤣🤣🤣) mechanic: I gave it a try over the whole frame. First impressions are really good ! It was then I clicked that its made by the same people who make True Tension BananaSlip Tungsten chain lube. Which I also use: rate, use and love 👌

Hopefully the weather 🌦️ forecast is ‘wrong’ though: and we get to do some riding this weekend……..🤨

As well as ‘this’ - storm Darragh has beaten me today; in the fact I’m bored already just sitting in. And have ordered some more ‘bling’ for no reason other than that 🙄 After thinking how I could add a little more Silver to the bike……

So the incoming pedals are Silver (If Yodel ever actually become a delivery company again 🤨).
And today I’ve bought:

Polished Seatpost:

And a pair of Silver Derailleur jockey wheels……

Installed some new Derailleur jockey wheels tonight. I was ‘concerned’ they were ‘only’ some cheap Aluminium jobbies; and not made of some rare and expensive unobtanium Alloy….

IMG_7223.jpeg

Until I realised the originals were constructed from Shimano’s finest plastic 🤣 And had survived 12 years and goodness knows how many miles just fine.

Both were pretty worn mind. Retrieved this one from the bin to picture. The other (Must have been under more load / tension) was a fair bit worse in terms of the teeth starting to get very rounded:

IMG_7225.jpeg

Also fitted some Welgo. double bearing pedals in Silver for some more contrasting coloured parts…..

Just awaiting a polished Seat-post now. And at that point I can fit the rear post-mounted mudguard I’ve bought today too.

Roll on the weekend. Gagging for a ride after missing last weekend due to Darragh putting his parts on 💨🌦️☔️

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Those old ones don’t look that worn, when they wear out the teeth become pointed. I wouldn’t have bothered changing them.
Indeed. I have seen some that are almost completely worn away.

I am going to use a 25 year old rear mech as a chain tensioner on my DIY singlespeed turbo trainer bike. The jockey wheels on that are showing noticeable signs of wear...

Not completely useless but I might as well fit new ones on while I am putting the bike together so I have just ordered these cheapo plastic replacements on eBay. I have used this type before. They are not fancy but they do the job.

Quite. For £8 delivered for a pair; and with what feel to be pretty decent bearings (Most certainly a huge improvement over the original parts coming off) - why wouldn’t you bother.

**I can clearly feel / hear less resistance when running the cranks / drivetrain in reverse now indoors as I did after fitting. Another 2w saved 🤣

Your kit even came with new bolts ! I was a bit miffed putting the old bolts back……

I’ve righted that with ordering some finest grade Chinesium ‘Titanium’ 🙄 this Morning

IMG_7229.jpeg

To be fair- and i can only speak as i find - i've got a select few of these type of 'Chinese' Titanium bolts [Often when i've found these available in odd size threads / head sizes or with non standard shoulders / shank length etc] in what i'd class as non-critical areas (I personally wouldn't consider these in a pedal spindle, crank, maybe even stem bolts etc) - and i've had no issues to date.

Amazingly small. But amazingly big World at times isn’t it……

Met a guy in the LBS tonight….working on his cool looking ‘On One’ Gravel bike (650b wheels, FAT tyres, drop bars, suspension forks, 1 x 12 drivetrain etc). Upon striking up a conversation / asking where he rides - and then showing him pics of my ‘off tarmac’ jaunts - he asked if I was on Strava: so he could follow my routes.

Turns out he rides many of the same areas, often at the same times as me - and at about the same pace. It’s incredible we ended up crossing paths in the LBS. and not on the Trail somewhere 🤷‍♂️

Anyways-up: We’re hooking up in the New Year / he’s joining me and my riding buddy to explore some more of the Norfolk / Suffolk border 😎

Sick of struggling to find somewhere to clean / jet wash bikes apre rides…..or something to lean them against, or not block up the road laying them down out front etc: I’ve spent sone time early on the first day of my Festive Holidays making up a ‘Jetwash Stand” 😎

Super dense 4” wood that should last some years !
Gap set for the fattest tyre in the fleet (60mm):

IMG_7377.jpeg

I’ll make up easy-to-use some shins / spacers to close the gap down for everything else with narrower rubber 😉

First coat of Ronseal Fencecoat: that we had a full tub of in the shed is on the Jet-Wash stand. ‘Light Oak’ is the shade if anyone’s curiosity is getting the better of them 🤣 🤣

IMG_7378.jpeg

Something someone here might find useful is the stuff on the right. It’s self amalgamating Silicone tape.

A link to the stuff I bought is here:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/40416561...C0nOHPhReS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I’ve mounted various lights on handlebars recently. And some continue to slip for various reasons when getting jolted around off-road.

This stuff is a couple of mm thick. And although not sticky as such; sticks to itself when overlapped. And grips well to the bars. And then provides a grippy surface for the “light bracket”. But this could of course be anything you’re mounting to a bike frame, handle bars, seat or chain stays etc. And of course provides some scratch / mark protection too.

I genuinely don’t think my toolbox in the garage will ever be complete going forward if there isn’t a roll of this in there……👌

You could have saved all that time and bother and just bought one of these 🤣
