Should I invest in a turbo trainer for the winter???????

I own, but am not a fan of trainers. I'd rather ride in bad weather than cycle nowhere in the living room. I have used mine to recover from injury and surgery, but as soon as I could get out, I did so. They can also be useful to tweak bike fit.

I don't mind them. I can watch Midsomer Murders and pedal at the same time. I prefer the road though.

Turbos are ideal for short duration, high intensity training - and if that's what you need to do, then no other kind of riding comes close in terms of effectiveness. If you don't need to do those kind of efforts, then you will struggle to maintain interest while on it.

I only found my one more useful when I used to need it for specific sprint type training or one legged drills

One legged drills are great - if you only have one leg.

The majority seem to think it's boring but I love the turbo not only in the winter, just dont get on it without a plan of what you want to achieve out of the session and keep mixing it up. Also I find it much better with music to accompany the session.

I've just ordered my turbo, purely on the basis of where I live, the roads in the winter are horrendous, and hardly ever get touched with gritters, and I can't just stop cycling now.

My girlfriends uncle was at a family get together today and he's quite serious about his cycling, and says he wouldn't be without one. He has his spare bike perma-rigged to the turbo so if he has half an hour to kill he'll jump on and blitz it at about 85% effort to get a quick workout.

i have had a trainer for a few weeks now, i like it for increasing my riding time when i have not got the time/weather and for intervals. I could not get out today (tomorrow morning looking more likely) but did manage 45 mins on the trainer. Its more intensive and you can get a good workout, good for intervals, safer than trying to do the same on the road. It can be boring......but i just plug myself into the ipod and listen to some upbeat music......ifi ams working hard at the intervals i find i dont get bored......its hard work just keeping going......if you do a workout on one remember to reduce the total time on the bike when compared to out on the road as you are not moving about much or freewheeling as you would in traffic etc so you can strain yourself if you do too long

the Boardman has been brilliant. It had 2 issues last month, bad gear set up and a squeeky BB but it was stripped and rebuilt and it's been brilliant since. Looking at buying a Boardman Road bike in the near future

Get a rigid MTB for winter, the extra weight will be all the training you need .Got my bike out today for a trip to the post office to pick up a parcel as i did not want to do the full lycra look for a couple of miles and by eck it was hard work .
