My sandwich bread had a bit of mould on it and gone off coleslaw, and I'm still here :o)...I avoided the green bits though.

Hmm ... I can imagine what my BIL would think - he's in the food industry (mirco-biology sort of person) and has to be one of the pickiest persons about dates, and keeping food correct etc. Sometimes we have to hide food when he comes around in case he see's the date:biggrin:.

I would eat it; I've eaten plenty of things that were past their best-before date and I have had Diarrhoea and Vomiting once (yes, once) in the last 10 years and that was in the wilds of Thailand after eating God-knows-what (unidentified meat in very hot sauce). I last had a stomach ache about 3 years ago!

Well whilst we're exchanging bad food stories, I once ate an Octopus Pizza. And very nice it was too. Unfortunately I was not to know that it had been caught in the Bay of Acapulco which is, I was told afterwards, the most heavily polluted area of sea worldwide (or one of them). I can only say, I was glad that the bath was so close to the lavatory in that hotel. Three days of my life lost.

How are you feeling Greedo? Any immedaite urge to puke, stomach cramps or headache?

You didn't give the cat a piece first just to be sure?

Hi,

This is Greedo's colleague. He's currently en route to hospital with suspected food poisoning. The idiot ate a pack of meat 2 months out of date and no we don't have a cat in the office. Don't know many offices that do have a cat either :o)

Too late since its been eaten but since I find this topic quite interesting I'll give my 2 cents.

People often get confused by use by and best by dates, to be honest it is misleading, if a food item has best by on it, its still edible after that date, however for how long after? You dont know, hence the whole system is quite silly, it should have a date for both on all food items.

Coming from a food sustainablity point of view (since I work in research in the field) best before and use by dates are on the most part, rubbish and lead to huge amounts of wasted food stuffs. They are unscientific and hence they are given a large margin of error. This means people (and supermarkets) throw away huge amounts of food that are perfectly suitable for consumption with no detriment to their quality. So chances are that food would be fine.

If its milk thats out of date you know, if its something like sea food or chicken dont risk it, but if its something preserved and been well refrigerated, chances are its okay.

I generally trust my nose on these things.

if it smells appetising - eat it.

if it doesnt smell appetising - don't eat it.

I sometimes have milk that on the turn, never seems to do me any harm.
Fizzy yoghurts are interesting too.
mouldy cheese doesnt bother me - just cut off the mould.
Bread - just pinch our the blue/green bits.
Fruit & Veg - if it's too soft - don't eat it.
If it was edible when it went into the freezer, it will be edible when it comes out of the freezer.

I think theres a big difference between 'best before' and edible.

Without realising, I had cerials with milk that was a whole day past its date last week. For me, (who inspects the bread if it's more than a day old looking for blue bits) this is not good.

I felt fine until I discovered what I'd done. ;)
