Very, very fortunate to be able to afford this. Nothing irritates me more than reference to a "well stocked food cupboard" as millions cannot conceive of this. The epitome of middle-class approach to food in recipes, TV programmes etc.

Yeah that really bugs me, I've often tried to cook something different but get scuppered as I don't have "Glom of nit" or other such obscure ingredient. I've tried buying things special but it's not worth it (even if I can find it!)

A website I use is https://www.supercook.com/#/desktop - add the ingredients you have and it gives you recipe ideas. It does also tell me what I'm missing which is good as I often forget what I might have in the cupboard so that reminds me.

There's a few of those style sites available and apps too, that's just one I've used most.

Is there a shortage of Brussel Sprouts ? Good!

While I do like Brussel Sprouts, I would hope there is a shortage at the moment, because they are well out of season :smile:

Bread Flour. Brown and White - shelf space where it used to be has vanished in my local Aldi, and some reappeared this week in Lidl - strangely enough at the same price as it was before its absence. Noticed shortage in Sainsburys, and what little there was appeared to have increased in price.

I think these shortages are very localised. While bread flour was in short supply round here a few months ago, it is now readily available in most of the supermarkets we visit.

There was a sign in Morrison's a few weeks ago that cooking oil was limited to 1 per customer. There was none left, so I chose from the huge selection of others and ended up with olive oil. Last time I went in the other day, all oils were back to normal. It doesn't bother me, I'm not fussy as to veg oil, olive, rapeseed, vegetable or even lard. It's only used to wipe my non-stick pan and lasts me ages
 
I like to keep the cupboards well stocked to avoid running out. A simple example would be washing-up liquid; one in use; one in cupboard and as the one in use gets low I buy a replacement so there's ways the spare in the cup board.

Basic foodstuffs we buy in large quantities and decant into small containers for daily kitchen use. I have a utility cupboard where one would find several kilos of rice, a range of pasta, dried beans, lentils, tinned tomatoes, beans, etc. Same principle applies to the freezer with chicken, mince, fish, stewing steak and so on. Things get replaced as stocks run down so I'd buy rice when I get to the last kilo.

I work this way so as to have everything to hand and the cost is lower. As we are only two a kilo of rice lasts 10 meals so hardly a crisis one week to the next. I'll probably keep a closer eye on these things now.

It's the more specialist foods I've noticed as short. For example I've run out of arborio rice and it will take weeks to find. I can live without risotto!!!!!

You're very much like me, I see.

What I will add is that I do take advantage of clearance offers on staples like rice and pasta and tinned goods. 69p for a kilo of basmati rice - no brainer. Likewise 33p for a kilo of "weird brand" pasta after first lockdown two years ago. I'm still working my way through a job lot of Napolina tomato paste I acquired a while back as well. :blush:
 
Thanks for the offer Pat but plain water works and since the bread is for myself nobody is going to complain about it being a bit denser than others may like. It still puzzles me why this should affect the rise since I worked with yeast for years in the distilling industry.

The fat content will soften the crumb. :smile: Alternatively, sub some of the water with whole milk, or just rub some lard or butter into the flour.
